WORKING WITH A CONSULTANT / INSIGHTS

How Much Does Restaurant Consulting Cost? Fees, Scope and What’s Included

Restavision Insights · Practical Guide · Published

Graphic showing restaurant consulting fees from ₹50,000 to ₹10 lakh in three levels: one focused job, several areas at once, and a full launch or franchise.

"How much will a consultant cost?" is usually the first question a restaurant owner asks, and too often the answer is "it depends" with nothing after it. Here is a straight answer. At Restavision, restaurant consulting starts from ₹50,000 and can go up to ₹10 lakh, depending on the scope of work. This guide explains what sits at each level, what moves a project up or down the range, and how to make sure the fee you pay buys real results.

The short answer: three levels of work

Most projects fall into one of three levels. The fee follows the scope: how many areas of the business the work covers, how much is delivered as documents versus hands-on implementation, and how long the support lasts.

Fee rangeTypical scopeExamples
₹50,000 – ₹1.5 lakhOne focused job for a running restaurantMenu costing and menu engineering, a set of SOPs, a food safety audit with a corrective action plan
₹1.5 lakh – ₹4 lakhFixing several areas of a running outlet at onceMenu and food cost, SOPs, staff training and daily controls for an outlet whose sales are fine but profit is not
₹4 lakh – ₹10 lakhA full new-outlet launch or franchise setupConcept, kitchen layout, menu, licence planning, hiring and training, SOPs and opening support, usually on a retainer
Every project is quoted on its own scope

These ranges are a guide, not a price list. After a short discussion of your format, stage and the problem you want solved, you receive a written scope and a quote before any work starts.

What decides where your project falls

Two restaurants can ask for "help with the menu" and need very different amounts of work. These are the factors that move a fee up or down the range.

  • Number of areas covered: a menu costing exercise is one piece of work; menu, SOPs, training and controls together are four.
  • New outlet or running outlet: a launch involves concept, layout, equipment, licences, hiring and opening support, so it naturally sits at the top of the range.
  • Documents or implementation: receiving a set of SOPs costs less than having someone install them, train the team and check that they are followed.
  • Format and size: a 40-cover café, a 150-cover casual dining restaurant and a central kitchen supplying several outlets are very different jobs.
  • Number of outlets: work for a second outlet or a franchise model includes playbooks, audits and training that a single outlet does not need.
  • How long support lasts: a two-week audit and a four-month launch are priced differently, mainly because of the time involved.

Fixed project fee or monthly retainer?

There are two common ways to structure a consulting engagement, and each suits a different kind of work.

Fixed project fee

Best for focused work with clear deliverables, such as a menu engineering exercise, an SOP set or a food safety audit. You know the full cost upfront, and the work ends when the agreed deliverables are handed over.

Retainer

For bigger projects, where the scope is wide and the work runs over several months, a retainer is the better fit. A new-outlet launch or a franchise setup involves many decisions that cannot all be planned on day one. A retainer gives you ongoing handholding: regular reviews, quick answers when something comes up, and support until the outlet is stable, not just until the documents are delivered.

What a good consulting quote should include

Whoever you hire, the quote should make it easy to see exactly what you are paying for. Before you sign, check that it covers:

  • A written scope: the problem being solved and the areas covered.
  • A list of deliverables: for example, costed recipes for every dish, 25 SOPs, a training plan or an audit report.
  • Timelines: when each stage starts and ends.
  • How support is given: site visits, review meetings, calls and messages, and how many of each are included.
  • What is not included: so there are no surprises later.
  • Handover: how your team will run the systems once the engagement ends.

Costs that sit outside the consulting fee

A consultant plans and guides the work, but some costs are paid directly to other people. Budget for these separately, especially for a new outlet:

  • Government and licence fees, such as FSSAI registration, trade licence and fire approvals.
  • Architect, interior designer and civil work.
  • Kitchen equipment, smallwares and furniture.
  • Technology subscriptions, such as POS, inventory and online ordering tools.
  • Photography, branding and printing.

How to get value for your consulting fee

  1. Start with the problem, not the service. "Our food cost is 38% and we want it near 30%" leads to a sharper scope than "we need menu help".
  2. Share your numbers early. Sales, purchase bills, recipes and menu prices let the work start on day one instead of week two.
  3. Begin focused if you are unsure. A ₹50,000–₹1.5 lakh engagement on your biggest problem is a low-risk way to see how a consultant works before committing to a larger project.
  4. Name an owner on your side. Someone in your team must own implementation, or the best systems stay on paper.
  5. Agree how success will be measured. Food cost percentage, audit score, rating or opening date: decide it before the work starts.
